We left Tenterfield and our beautiful cabin in the dust of inland NSW and headed for Bald Rock National Park. On the way we passed Captain Thunderbolt's hideout! Apparently Captain Thunderbolt was a bushranger that committed hundreds of crimes ranging from highway robbery to horse stealing, then escaped from jail and hid out at this hideout before eventually being killed in an attempted robbery. The place was a load of huge granite boulders, resting on top of each other, creating lots of spaces that could be used as rooms.
After that we drove all the way to the national park to have some lunch before climbing bald rock. As soon as we even thought about getting the food out we were surrounded by a load of hungry birds which sat in the trees staring menacingly at our food and would occasionally make daring dives across the table to try and steal stuff! It was so bad that someone had to be left at the table at all times to shoo them away!!
After lunch we took the short walk to the rock. After clearing the last few trees we could finally see it. It was amazing to see a huge lump of granite just sticking out of the ground in the middle of nowhere! The surface was very steep, but fairly even and quite rough so it was easy enough to climb. After about an hour we were at the top and could see over the border into Queensland. The area is called the New England Granite Belt, and we could see lots of smaller mounds of granite pertruding from the ground. At the top there was a box with a visitors book inside so we signed our names, walked around the top for a bit, then started the journey down! Bald Rock has to be one of the most amazing sights I've seen in Australia, the pictures just can't capture the sheer size of it. If you're in the area then go check it out.
At the end of the day we started the big slog back to the coast....that's when things started to go wrong....
Bald Rock from the base
There was a huge termite mound at the bottom, I was so amazed I made a strange face!
The view down from about 3/4 of the way up
The view out to the rest of the national park from the same spot
The top in sight!
This kangaroo also came for a climb
The view down a valley-type area from the top
It was amazing to see big rocks just pearched everywhere...how did they get there?!
