Palaces and Pickpockets....

At night the main square is transformed into a city of big covered BBQs lit up with lanterns and covering the whole area with smoke and amazing aromas of juicy lamb skewers and chicken Tagine!

Even before you get near to the stalls you're surrounded by Moroccans shouting about why their food is the best and trying to get you to come eat at their BBQ. They go to great lengths to try and get you in, sometimes dressing up or playing some music for you. A more unusual ploy included a guy dressed up in a Liverpool football shirt who said (imagine thick Moroccan accent) "Hello my friend, my name is Steven Gerrard, I am a scouser. Come and eat my food it's BLOODY GOOD"!!

I ate with an Australian girl and Egyptian guy from the hostel. Afterwards we wandered through the square looking at the dancers, illegal gambling rings, snake charmers and musicians. The night was livened up further by the fact that someone tried to pickpocket me and the Egyptian guy on separate occasions. Luckily they weren't very good. They were, however, good at running and scarpered before we could tell the police....

The next day I visited Saadian tombs and Badi & Bahia palaces. Badi Palace is ruined but the huge red stone walls give you a glimpse of the sheer scale of this magnificent palace. Bahia palace was the exact opposite. It's much smaller, perfectly preserved and its surrounding courtyard shields it from the noise of the city and gives you the impression that you're the only one around for miles. The many indoor gardens have everything from orange trees to heather bushes and it was the perfect place to relax for a couple of hours.

The tombs are the resting place for the many Kings, Princes and Princesses of ancient times. Each tomb is decorated with coloured tiles and some are housed inside the burial chambers and the others lie in the gardens of the tomb....

I'm off for a trek into the Sahara Desert today....on Camels!

Djemaa el-fnaa (the main square) is always packed at night
